The female athlete is basketball player Makayla Daniels of Frederick High School. Makayla won a starting job as Freshman and now as a Junior is a team leader. Makayla led her team to a berth in the State 3A Final Four as a freshman and last year as a sophomore led the Cadets to a Md. state championship, scoring 47 points in the 3A Championship Game win over Atholton.
This year she has picked up where she left off last March, averaging 18.1 points and 3.0 assists a game and leading her team to a 17-2 record so far. One of her best games this season came on February 1 vs. Walkersville when she scored 29 points including 10 clutch free throws in a 58-52 win over a very good Walkersville team. Makayla has verbally committed to play college basketball at the University of Arkansas.
The male high school athlete of the Month is Senior Nicholas Lang of Linganore High School. Nothing can show you better what Lang is made of then his recent performance against a very tough Tuscarora team. Lang scored 28 points including five three pointers for the 15-5 Lancers. as they beat the home standing Titans. During the season Lang has placed in all three offensive categories averaging 18.8 points a game, 4.3 assists per game and 7 rebounds a game. Opposing coach Darryl Whiten told the Frederick News Post after the game: “He made a lot of tough shots, he’s a prolific scorer, he’s a great player.”
Both Makayla Daniels and Nicholas Lang will be featured on this Sunday’s Noon edition of “Frederick County Sports Weekend” on WFMD.
