Frederick, Md (KM) Since Frederick County Sheriff’s Deputies began carrying NARCAN almost ten years ago, the lives which have been saved have been in the hundreds. That’s according to Sheriff Chuck Jenkins, and that statistic is only flor the Sheriff’s Office.

NARCAN is a nasal spray used to help counter the affects of drug overdoses. It’s used by medics and private citizens as well as law enforcement officers.

But Jenkins, who was a guest recently on WFMD’s “Morning News Express,” says one dose  is often not enough to counter the affects of an overdose. He says it often takes two, three and four doses. “As a matter of fact, there is one manufacturer of NARCAN which is now packaging a double dose. Rather than four milligrams, eight milligrams per dose,” he says.

Sheriff’s Deputies began carrying NARCAN in early 2013. Jenkins acknowledges the deputies were a bit reluctant to administer the nasal spray. “There are really no counter indicators. It is really not harmful to administer,” he says.
