Washington County Emergency Operations Center Upgraded To Enhanced Activation

Officials say this is due to multiple threats posed by Tropical Storm Debby.

Hagerstown, Md (KM) The Washington County Office of Emergency Management says it continues to monitor the track of Tropical Storm Debby, but it has raised the Emergency Operations Center to Enhanced Activation Status. Officials say this action comes as scattered, and slow moving thunderstorms and the remnants of Tropical Storm Debby pose multiple threats to the area.

Bands of thunderstorms are expected to come through Washington County on Thursday morning through Thursday afternoon, increasing the risks of scattered flash flooding.

By Thursday evening through Friday night, Washington County could experience heavy rains and flooding, tornadoes, gusty winds and river flooding. Two to four inches could fall near and west of the Catoctin Mountains.

Residents are urged to turn around, and don’t drown if they encounter flooded roads while driving. Washington County officials say floodwater could hide numerous dangers such as debris, washed out roads and strong currents. What may appear to be a shallow puddle could be much deeper and more hazardous than it looks.

If you come upon a flooded road, turn around and find an alternate route. Do not risk your safety, and the safety of the other occupants of your vehicle.
