Frederick Md (KM) A former, two-term Mayor of Frederick has died. City officials announced the passing of Jim Grimes at the age of 85. He served as Mayor from 1994 to 2002..
During his time at City Hall, Grimes championed Frederick Municipal Airport as an economic driver for the city; and Monocacy Boulevard for its transportation benefits and its potential for economic development. Prior to being elected Mayor in 1994, Grimes served as an aldermen, a Planning Commission member, and a judge of the Orphans Court for Frederick County.
Grimes was born in Lewistown, Maryland in 1939, and served in the Army following his graduation from Frederick High.
He also founded Grimes Truck Center in 1961, and went on to manage auto, truck and tractor repairs from 1967 to 2002..
Grimes served as President of the Great Frederick Fair’s Board of Directors. He was also a founding member and first president of the Lewistown Volunteer Fire Department.
“Though we feel deep sorrow for Mayor Grimes’ passing, we take a measure of peace in understanding the great contributions he made to the city and the community,” said Frederick Mayor Michael O’Connor, in a statement. “Jim Grimes’ legacy will certainly live on in the City of Frederick, as will our gratitude for his dedication and service.”
In honor of former Mayor Grimes’ memory, Mayor O’Connor has ordered state and city flags on city property to be lowered to half-staff until sunset on the day of Grimes’ interment.
