Westminster, Md (KM) A Baltimore man has been charged in connection with a fatal hit and run in Taneytown last year. On Thursday, February 27th, 2025, Darius Deontae Bond, 19, was indicted by the Carroll County Grand Jury for hit and run causing death, theft between $25,000 and $100,000, and driving without a license. The first two charges are felonies, and the third offense is a misdemeanor.

On August 20th, 2024, at around 4:30 AM, police, fire and rescue were called to the 2700 block of Francis Scott Key Highway for a vehicle collision. First responders arriving at the scene found a black Infiniti QX60, which is an SUV, abandoned. It was reported stolen from Baltimore. The Carroll County Sheriff’s Office says the Infiniti collided with a yellow Harley Davidson motorcycle operated by Terry Crowl, 55, of Taneytown. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Investigators also learned the two occupants  of the SUV fled the scene on foot. They also determined  a white box truck was stolen  during the overnight hours from a home near the collision site.

“After extensive interviews, forensic analysis, and DNA recovered from the scene, Darius Deontae Bond was identified as the driver of the vehicle that struck and killed Terry Crowl,” says Carroll County Sheriff Jim Dewees, who held a news conference on Tuesday to update the public on the case.

“At the time of last week’s Carroll County indictment, Darius Bond was incarcerated in Frederick County and had been indicted for 2nd-degree burglary, motor vehicle theft, and fleeing from police in Frederick,” Sheriff Dewees continued. “The incident occurred on January 30th, 2025, just weeks after he was released from a Baltimore City jail for a September, 2024, handgun violation.”

Carroll County State’s Attorney, Haven Shoemaker, who was also at the news conference, said the Circuit Court in Carroll County issued a warrant, and Bond was brought to Carroll County from Frederick County on Monday. He’s being held without bond.

“In our country, everyone is presumed innocent until proven guilty,” Shoemaker said. “But we believe we have an extremely strong case.”

Also speaking at the news conference was Jim Staller, a relative of the victim, Terry Crowl. “If you ever had to live through a tragic event, the word that comes to mind is  frustration. It is incredibly frustrating to deal with the system that seems to favor the criminals,” he said.

A second person in the SUV with Bond at the time of the fatal collision has not been charged, Sheriff Dewees said.
