Mayor O’Connor says he must present to the City Council by April 1st.
Frederick Mayor Michael O’Connor
Frederick, Md (KM) It’s budget time at Frederick City Hall. Mayor Michael O’Connor says budget evaluations are underway. He says his staff has spoken with department heads, and budget decisions are being made. The Mayor says he has to present a fiscal year 2026 budget to the City Council by April 1srt.
“I think that one of the things that we’re lucky to deal with is we do not necessarily get a substantial amount of federal and state funding to balance our budget,” he says.
A large majority of the State of Maryland’s budget comes from federal sources.
Mayor O’Connor was a guest recently on WFMD’s “Morning News Express.”
But there is some federal money coming into the City of Frederick. “If we see support through primarily for the City of Frederick Department of Housing and Urban Development initiatives that are geared toward the homeless and housing and housing supports. If we see that funding dry up, how would we envision backfilling it? What could we backfill? How would we do that?” he asks.
The Mayor says he will develop a budget which is “thoughtful” and meets the needs of the community. “The objective is the make sure that we’re providing our residents for the taxes that we receive, the services that they expect at a high level,” he says.
Also, Mayor O’Connor says there there will be contingencies in the budget inĀ case of unforeseen events.
