Thurmont, Md. (KM) – Fire fighters battled a building fire Wednesday morning at Camp Airy Near Thurmont.
Frederick County Fire and Rescue Services spokeswoman Sarah Campbell says the alarm was first sounded at around 7:30 AM for a building fire in the 14900 block of Camp Airy Road. When they arrived fire fighters saw smoke from the roof and requested rapid intervention dispatch. The fire later went to a second alarm.
Campbell says personnel from surrounding jurisdictions also responded. “It took approximately 100 fire fighters about three hours to place the fire under control,” she says. There was no one inside the dining hall at the time, and no one was injured.
It also took fire fighters several hours do overhaul and put out hot spots.
The County Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating the cause of the fire, and a damage estimate.
Camp Airy is a Jewish sleep away summer camp at the edge of the Catoctin Mountains for boys between the ages of 7 and 17.
