Clothing items and footwear under $100 will be state sales tax exempt.
Frederick, Md. (NS) – Many items are about to be sales tax free for a week in Maryland.
Comptroller Peter Franchot said clothes and footwear under $100 will be exempt from the state’s 6% sales tax.
“It initially was advertised as back to school shopping tax free, but it’s frankly any item of clothing or footwear for going back to school, kids, but also for adults. It’s proven to be enormously popular, been in effect for almost 13 years,” said Franchot.
He explained that many backpacks will also be tax free, just in time for the new school year.
“This is just a gentle reminder that this is coming up, it starts on Sunday the 14th and ends on Saturday at midnight on August 20th. I want to make sure people are aware of it because in the past it’s been enormously popular,” Franchot explained.
He added that many stores will also hold special sales during the Shop Maryland Tax-Free Week.
