The adult-only event will teach how to keep children safe while on the internet.
Frederick, Md. (NS) – Internet safety will be the focus of a presentation by the State’s Attorney’s Office, US Secret Service, and Frederick County Cyber Crimes Task Force on August 22.
Will Cockey with the State’s Attorney’s Office said the one hour event will begin at 7 p.m. at the Frederick County Law Enforcement Center on Airport Drive.
“What’s going to be covered really will be indicators for parents to look for that their child may be involved in something concerning online. We’ll also give tips as far as how parents can have conversations with their kids about those concerns,” said Cockey.
He said these kinds of incidents are not rare.
“Unfortunately, this is a common issue everywhere. Thankfully, here in Frederick County, we have the Frederick County Cyber Crimes Task Force which is just working really hard to make sure that these online predators are found, they’re investigated, and prosecuted,” Cockey explained.
He added that kids have many ways to access the internet, and predators are out there.
“Frankly, it’s important for parents to be able to see what their kids are doing online and who they’re talking to. So, we’re going to talk about various concerns such as sexting, online sexual solicitation, cyberbullying, sextortion, and various types of inappropriate content that their kids may experience online,” Cockey said.
He said that the presentation is for adults only due to the graphic nature of the material.
