Failure to abide by the law could result in a fine.
FREDERICK, Md. (BW)- The move over law in Maryland is being expanded starting Saturday, Oct 1.
Lieutenant Jason Deater of the Frederick County Sherrif’s Office said that the law requires drivers to move over or slow down when approaching any vehicle parked on the side of the road with emergency signals on, including hazard lights and flares.
Before the expansion of the law, it stated that drivers only needed to move over or slow down for emergency vehicles such as firetrucks, police cars and tow trucks.
Deater added that the purpose of this law is to keep everyone safe and lessen the danger that comes with being stopped on a roadway’s shoulder.
“Unfortuantely a lot of times when vehicles are struck on the side of the road, there usually is pretty significant damage,” Deater said.
Failure to follow the law could result in a citation, a fine upwards of $110 and one point on a driver’s license.
