Hagerstown, Md. (According to The Herald Mail)- Two women have been charged for allegedly trying to smuggle drugs into Roxbury Correctional Institution in Hagerstown.
The woman arrived at RCI on June 4 with no intention of visiting an inmate. The suspects are identified as 24-year-old Julie Danielle Chatterton and 51-year-old Monica Elaine Shields, both from Baltimore.
Officials said they tried to leave several opioids and tobacco products in a diaper disposal inside the gatehouse bathroom.
Each suspect was charged with felony possession of buprenorphine with intent to distribute.
Chatterton was also charged with felony possession of methamphetamine with intent to distribute. She allegedly told police that she was paid $3,500 via CashApp to bring in contraband that her boyfriend, an inmate, had requested.
Shields told investigators that the contraband she brought in was requested by her brother.
The prison value of the contraband Chatterton tried to smuggle in is $152,000. Shields tried to smuggle in $33,700 worth of drugs.
Each suspect can face up to five years in prison or a $15,000 fine per offense.
This attempt to smuggle drugs into RCI comes a few weeks after officials revealed investigations of another smuggling scheme that involved a suspect leaving items in a bathroom at the University of Maryland Medical Center, where an inmate would pick them up during a medical appointment.
The investigation into this smuggling attempt is ongoing.
