Hagerstown, Md (KM) The Maryland State Fire Marshal’s Office has charged a man with several counts of manufacturing and possession of destructive devices within his home. Stephen Kyle Thompson, 48, was arrested on Monday. He is being held without bond.
Investigators say Thompson’s estranged wife found suspicious items in the basement of their home in Washington County. Bomb Squad technicians responded to the scene, and located blasting caps.
The Fire Marshal’s Office says blasting caps are used with explosives to initiate controlled detonations for construction, mining and demolition. In the wrong hands, they can pose a threat to public safety, property and the environment. Their illicit use can be catastrophic, leading to severe injuries, a loss of life and property damage, according to fire officials.
An investigation determined that Thompson allegedly stole the devices from his employer, Rust-Oleum, which uses them legally to put out fires.
Thompson is charged with eight counts of manufacturing and possessing explosive devices, and one count of possession of explosives without a license. He’s also charged with theft between $1500 to $25,000.
Thompson is currently being held without bond.
“The quick recognition of the potential hazard with these devices and her decision to immediately contact local authorities was absolutely appropriate in this incident,” says Maryland State Fire Marshal Brian Geraci, in a statement. “This serves s a positive reminder to all members of the public of the National message: See Something, Say Something.”
