Hagerstown, Md. (BW)- Construction to widen lanes on the exit 9 ramps on Interstate 81 began this week.
Crews from the Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration will spend a year on a construction project to widen the exit ramps on Interstate 81 at Maugans Avenue, north of Hagerstown.
An additional lane will be added to the entrance and exit ramps on both the nothbound side and southbound side of I-81.
There will also be new traffic signals and improved lighting and signage at the exit ramps.
On Maugans Avenue, crews will construct full-depth patching on the shoulders and reconstruct the median.
Officials say this project will improve safety, reduce congestion and increase mobility.
Part of the project also includes improving storm drainage and constructing erosion and sediment facilities.
Work will be done Mondays through Saturdays and is expected to be completed in the summer of 2024.
