Sandy Hook, Md (KM) The railroad bridge over the Potomac River near Sandy Hook Road in Maryland caught fire Monday afternoon.
Washington County Fire and Rescue says units were dispatched at 3:38 PM. Upon arriving at 3:47 PM they found a large fire on the bridge which was spreading rapidly.
Due to the high temperatures and extensive fire damage, additional units from Washington County as well as Jefferson and Frederick Counties were called to the scene. Water tankers from all three jurisdictions were dispatched because of the limited water supply access in that area.
Two boats were brought in as a precaution due to fire fighters working on an elevated structure over the Potomac River.
Officials with Washington County say the fire was brought under control by 5:30 PM. Fire fighters extinguished hot spots until the fire was declared out.
CSX, which owns the bridge, was brought in to assess the damage and determine what repairs were needed.
No injuries were reported.
