Westminster, Md (KM) The Maryland State Fire Marshal’s Office and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) are reporting some progress in their investigation of a church fire in Westminster on Thursday afternoon.  . Officials say the origin of the fire at the Clearfield Bible Church at 1303 Old Westminster Road was in the attic area near the steeple. But the cause remains under investigation due to the excessive damage caused by the fast moving fire.

Investigators say they have not found any evidence that the fire resulted from any criminal activity, and are looking into accidental causes or electrical failure.

The Fire Marshal’s Office says the damage is estimated at $1.5 million. .

The fire was discovered by a passerby and a volunteer church employee who was inside the building when the fire broke out. The employee was in the basement at the time, and was able to get out.

An estimated 75 fire fighters from Carroll, Baltimore and York Counties responded to the fire and spent two hours bringing the flames under control. Due to the rapid spread of the fire in the attic area, the roof and numerous walls collapsed.

One fire fighter was taken to the hospital with a life-threatening medical emergency.

A local citizen helped investigators in removing heavy debris.

The State Fire Marshal’s Office says this concludes  its  origin and cause investigation with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF).
