Frederick Residents Concerned About Max Kehne Memorial Park Becoming Baseball Field for Hood College

Max Kehne Park (7)

Second public meeting to be held on Tuesday, November 12, 2024.

FREDERICK, MD.  (LG)  Officials with Hood College are exploring options in Frederick to have a baseball field built for their school’s baseball team, which has been sharing Frederick Community College’s field, since 2015.

During a public meeting last week, the Max Kehne  Memorial Park was the topic of discussion.  Many residents who attended the gathering were in opposition of that site.  Patrick Kurpius, who lives near the Memorial Park, suggested the Frederick Keys Stadium.

“Which is a proper, legitimate ball field with stadiums, dugouts and facilities. The question was why couldn’t they use that? And the answer was because the City can’t turn the water on, soon enough, in the season, which I find strange, because if they can’t turn it on there, then how are they going to turn it on at Max Kehne Park?”, said Patrick Kurpius, who lives on Culler Avenue.   McCurdy Field, where the Frederick Keys play baseball, was another suggestion.

“To me it feels like they just want something close by, is their primary preference, with a lack of regards to the neighborhood.”

Max Kehne Memorial Park has several amenities that the neighborhood residents would like to keep, including a Softball Diamond, Basketball Court, Bathroom Benches/Bleachers, Concession Area, Electric Lights, Parking,
Picnic Tables, Playground, Softball Field, Tennis Courts, Walking and Biking Paths, and a Water Fountain.

“The concern is that they would have to extend that softball field, significantly, to make room for this NCAA baseball field,” continued Kurpius.   According to them (Hood College officials) they are in the informational, gathering stage, but upon some other research, that does not appear to be the case,” Kurpius added.

Another public hearing on the possibility of the Max Kehne Memorial Park becoming Hood College’s baseball field, will be held on Tuesday, November 12, 2024, at Whitaker Campus Commons at Hood College.
