Direct File will be up and running January 2025.
FREDERICK, MD. (LG) A new online tax system will be coming to Maryland beginning January 2025. Comptroller Brooke Lierman says the State will be partnering with the Internal Revenue Service, to allow eligible Marylanders an option to use a free and secure system called Direct File.
“We are really excited about this program that the IRS is spearheading. We are going to be one of 23 states participating, starting in January of 2025,” Lierman said.
Direct File allows eligible taxpayers to be able to prepare and electronically file their tax return online directly with the IRS. “The benefit here is that you can use one free system and it’s secure. Once you fill out your federal form it will re-populate your Maryland form, and it’s free.”
According to the Maryland Comptroller’s website, Direct File offers a screener tool to assist taxpayers in determining if they meet eligibility requirement prior to filing.
The Department of Treasury estimates approximately 700,000 Maryland taxpayers may meet the eligibility requirements to use Direct File.
