Driver Charged In Fatal Collision On North Frederick Avenue

Suspect had a blood alcohol content of almost twice the legal limit and was doing almost 80 MPH when he  struck the victims vehicle.

Gaithersburg, MD – The Montgomery County Department of Police has arrested 45-year-old Agustin E. Jaramillo Lopez of Gaithersburg on charges of Negligent Manslaughter by Vehicle. The charges stem from a fatal collision that occurred on Saturday, July 20, 2024, on North Frederick Avenue near Travis Avenue.

At approximately 10:12 p.m. on Saturday, July 20, officers and Montgomery County Fire Rescue personnel responded to a collision involving a black 2022 Ram 1500 pick-up truck, operated by Jaramillo Lopez, and a black 2016 Nissan Altima.

The investigation revealed that Jaramillo Lopez was traveling northbound on North Frederick Avenue at an excessive speed when he rear-ended the Nissan, which had just turned right from the parking lot at 18701 North Frederick Avenue. The impact caused both vehicles to leave the road and strike a tree.

The driver of the Nissan, identified as 39-year-old Isaac Akomanyi of Germantown, was transported to an area hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries. A passenger in the Nissan and Jaramillo Lopez were also hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries.

The investigation by the Collision Reconstruction Unit determined that Jaramillo Lopez reached a top speed of 98.2 mph in a 40-mph zone and struck the Nissan at approximately 79.5 mph. His blood alcohol content was recorded at 0.159 one hour after the collision, nearly twice the legal limit.

Jaramillo Lopez is being held without bond at the Montgomery County Central Processing Unit.
