It does not apply to campfires, barbecues or gas grills.
Frederick, Md (KM) The Frederick County Health Department says the open burning ban goes into effect on June 1st, and continues through August 31st. That means open burning permits will not be issued during that time.
This prohibition does not apply to small recreational fires such as campfires, barbecues or gas grills.
Health officials say the ban is required by the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments as a way to reduce high ozone levels inĀ the region during the summer months, and allow for better air quality.
Violators of the open burning ban could face fines of up to $500 under the Frederick County Code; and those fines could go up to $25,000 under Maryland State Regulations.
The Health Department says when the open burning ban is lifted on August 31st, a permit is required for any open burning in the county. The burning of household trash is not permitted at any time of the year.
For more information on open burning, please contact the Community Services in the Environmental Health Services Division, which is part of the Frederick County Health Department. The number if 301-600-1717.
