Frederick, Md (KM) The Maryland State Police helicopter assisted in the rescue of an injured hiker Friday afternoon in the Frederick Municipal Forest.
Authorities say a 41-year-old woman was hurt when she fell in a rugged area of the forest just off of off 14,932 Gambrill Park Road. Trooper 3 based at Frederick Municipal Airport responded to the scene after rescue personnel encountered dangerous conditions.
In a news release, Maryland State Police say a pilot was able to maneuver the chopper, an AW-139, into a position 150-feet above a rocky embankment. A state trooper was lowered to the ground to get the patient ready for transport. The injured hiker was hoisted to the helicopter, and flown to Frederick Memorial Hospital for an evaluation.
Over the scanner, rescue crews at the scene say the hiker was a priority three, which means her injuries were not life-threatening.
Fire and rescue crews were dispatched at around 2:30 in the afternoon; they began clearing the scene at around 4:15.
State Police say, in a statement, that this is an “excellent example” of the collaboration between local law enforcement, EMS, technical rescue personnel and the State Police Aviation Command.
Troopers remind residents to exercise caution while enjoying summer activities.
