Federal Attorneys Visit FCI In Cumberland On Tues.

They’ll meet with inmates who are completing a Release Preparation Program.

US Attorney for Maryland Rod Rosenstein, and three other members of his staff are going to prison on Tuesday,  but they didn’t do anything wrong. They’ll be speaking to inmates at the FCI Cumberland in Allegheny County which includes a medium security institution, which has  approximately 1,100 inmates, and a minimum security satellite prison camp which houses 250 inmates..

Many of these inmates are scheduled to be released soon, and they face a number of challenges in the areas of employment, housing, child support, drug counseling and education opportunities. They also need to obtain critical documents such as driver’s licenses and social security cards.

“Our mission is preventing crime, not just sending people to prison,” Rosenstein says in a release. “Most former prisoners face strong temptations to return to a life of crime. We will emphasize that there are programs available to help them, and they need to make more constructive decisions in order to succeed.”

These inmates are in the Release Preparation Program, which provides them with job training and a mock job fair so they can find gainful employment after they’re released. These individuals are approaching their release date.

The RPP at FCI in Cumberland also provides inmates with resume preparation, and how to complete an employment application. The Reentry Center at FCI helps with driver’s licenses, social security cards, credit histories, child support and other issues.

The US Department of Justice has designated April 24th as “Reentry Week,” which recognizes that supporting a successful reentry for federal inmates is part of the Department’s mission to promote public safety.
