Weather Service Issues Flood Watches, Warnings

 Residents urged to take precautions.

 

The National Weather Service in Sterling Virginia has issued a * Flood Warning for… Southeastern Washington County in north central Maryland… Southwestern Frederick County in north central Maryland… * Until 1230 AM EDT. *

At 637 PM EDT, Doppler radar indicated heavy rain that will cause flooding. Localized rainfall amounts over one inch of rain have already fallen. Additional rainfall amounts of one to two inches are possible this evening. *

Some locations that may experience flooding include… Frederick, Harry Grove Stadium, Ballenger Creek, Brunswick, Boonsboro, Braddock Heights, Jefferson, Myersville, Keedysville, Sharpsburg, Fairplay, Rosemont, Rohrersville, Burkittsville, Gapland, Brownsville, Antietam, Clifton, Arnoldtown and Knoxville.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS… Be especially cautious at night when it is harder to recognize the dangers of flooding. A Flood Warning means that flooding is imminent or occurring. ...A FLOOD WARNING REMAINS IN EFFECT UNTIL 745 PM EDT FOR CENTRAL
FREDERICK COUNTY IN NORTH CENTRAL MARYLAND...

At 625 PM EDT, Doppler radar showed heavy rainfall across the area
which is causing minor flooding. Broadcast media and law
enforcement reported standing high water on some streets in
Frederick.

Around three inches of rain have already fallen between downtown
Frederick and the Broadview Acres neighborhood. Additional rainfall
amounts of one inch are possible this evening.

Some locations that may experience flooding include...
Frederick, Ballenger Creek, Walkersville, Clover Hill,
Discovery-Spring Garden, Linganore-Bartonsville, Woodsboro,
Libertytown, Bloomfield, Mount Pleasant, New Midway and Utica.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

Excessive runoff from heavy rainfall will cause flooding of small
creeks and streams, urban areas, highways, streets and underpasses as
well as other drainage areas and low lying spots.

A Flood Warning means that flooding is imminent or occurring. All
interested parties should take necessary precautions immediately.

The District of Columbia. In Virginia, Arlington/Falls Church/Alexandria, Clarke, Eastern Loudoun, Fairfax, Frederick VA, Northern Virginia Blue Ridge, Page, Rockingham, Shenandoah, Warren, and Western Loudoun. Periods of rain will continue across the region through at least Friday. This rain will be heavy at times, with overall additional rainfall totals of 3 to 5 inches.

While flash flooding cannot be ruled out, the primary concern is flooding of small streams and low-lying areas. Streams are already elevated and soils saturated from earlier rainfall, increasing the flood threat.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS… A Flood Watch means there is a potential for flooding based on current forecasts. You should monitor later forecasts and be alert for possible Flood Warnings.
