Count Changes Lead In District One County Council Race

At-Large race still up in the air.

Frederick, Md (KM) There’s been a change in some election results following the second day of absentee ballot counting which took place on Friday. In the Frederick County District One Council race, incumbent Democrat Jerry Donald has pulled ahead of Republican challenger Kevin Grubb. The latest numbers from the Elections Office show Donald with 11,385, or 50.41% of the vote. Grubb had 11,176, or 49.48%. 209 votes separate the two candidates.

In the at-large County Council race, Democrat Kai Hagen still maintains the lead with 45,683, or 23.97% of the votes. Republican Phil Dacey comes in second with 44,357, or 23.29% of the vote. He leads Republican Danny Farrar who has 44,031 or 23.12% of the votes.

The race for District 3B for the House of Delegates still shows Democrat Ken Kerr in the lead with 9,831 or 52.08 % of the vote, while Republican incumbent Bill Folden has 9,033 or 47.85% of the votes.

Election Director Stuart Harvey says the counting will continue this coming week. “There’s a provisional canvas on Wednesday. And we’ve got almost 1700 provisional ballets; it’s a total 1684. Those are going to be reviewed and canvassed on Wednesday. And then we will have the final absentee canvas on Friday. And right now, our estimate  is that there will be 1,000 ballots,” he says.

The absentee ballots which are counted are those which come in the mail with a postmark of November 6th, 2018, the day of the general election.

Harvey was also asked if the results of the Council District One race could change with the additional counts scheduled for the coming week. “Anything is possible because people don’t necessarily vote their party,.” he says. “It is a large number of provisional ballots. The predominant number of them in that district are Democratic.”

He says we may have to wait until this coming Friday to find out who won in the District One race for the County Council. “That’s the last canvas. We have to wait, as we did four years ago in the race for County Council District One. That absolutely was not decided until we counted the final vote,” says Harvey.
