It will be at the former Safeway on West 7th St.
Frederick, Md (KM) The Common Market Organic and natural food grocery store is expanding. In a news release, the company says it has purchased the former Safeway store on West Seventh Street in Frederick, and will turn it into a second Common Market location.
The new store will carry the same products as the current location on Route 85, but it will also add additional merchandise, a grocery pick-up, and a pet center with a wide selection of clean, local and organic pet products. It will also have a cafe like the Route 85 location, but the company says it will have more expanded operations.
No date was announced for the opening of the new Common Market store.
In its statement, the Common Market says this expansion comes in response to increased demand for the store’s local and Organic Food and non-food items. As a way to meet this demand, the company says it’s been looking for expansion opportunities for several years. The former Safeway store, which closed in May, 2018, presented an opportunity due to its proximity to downtown Frederick, Fort Detrick, Hood College and Frederick Memorial Hospital, the company says.
“We are constantly working to improve our store to better support out customers and their healthy lifestyle with high quality, local, natural and Organic products,” says General Manager Bob Thompson, in a statement. “With this additional location, we’ll be able to provide better access to our products and services , as well as increased support for our local suppliers.”
Mayor Michael O-Connor says the Common Market’s second location is good news for Frederick. “The Common Market’s news is good for the City in more comprehensive ways than just economic development, because this particular venture aligns with out sustainability plan, land use best practices and smart growth,” says O’Connor in a statement. “Plus it is economic development, as a business expansion, and job creation.”
