Frederick, Md (KM) Bryon Black has been appointed Frederick County Attorney. The County Council unanimously approved his appointment Tuesday afternoon.. He will take over the job from John Mathias whose retiring after 31 years as the County Attorney.
Black has been Senior Assistant County Attorney since 2018.. Prior to joining the County, Black was a partner at the law firm of Schaffer and Black PC, where he focused on such issues as criminal and contract law, property disputes, family law, administrative law, personal injury and estate planning. He also served inĀ the Frederick County State’s Attorney’s Office as an assistant state’s attorney.
He earned his Juris Doctor from the University of Dayton Law School in 1991.
“John Mathias has beenĀ a steady presence in Winchester Hall for decades. His legal guidance and sense of humor will be missed,” says County Executive Jan Gardner, in a statement. “We are fortunate to have someone of Bryon’s caliber ready to take over the role. Bryon brings a wealth of experience, strong management skills, and an emphasis on customer service. I’m sure he will hit the ground running and provide a smooth transition.”
Black is a resident of Middletown.
