Frederick, MD (KB) The Maryland State Police are increasing patrols to combat impaired driving this holiday season. Spokesman, Ron Snyder, said law enforcement officials want to make sure they are prepared, despite the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Like any holiday season, we anticipate the increased risk of impaired driving and we are looking to stay prepared,” he explained.

Snyder also said residents are expected to travel less this season due to the coronavirus.

“Of course we know in this COVID pandemic era, we anticipate fewer cars being on the road,” he said. “But as we’ve seen anecdotally, that just because there is fewer does not mean that there’s none.”

According to the Maryland Department of Transportation, an average of 145 people died from impaired driving annually from 2014 to 2018 in the state.

Snyder had advice for residents planning to drink alcohol over the holidays.

“The easiest thing to do is if you’re going to drink alcohol this holiday season, don’t drive, don’t get behind the wheel,” the spokesman said. “Get a sober driver. Stay at home.”

The State Police want to ensure that all Marylanders get to and from their holiday celebrations safely.
