The bill is sponsored by Council Member Steve McKay.
Frederick, MD (KB) The Frederick County Council is considering a bill that would provide property tax credits to local disabled veterans. The sponsor of the bill is Council Member Steve McKay, with co-sponsors Council Vice President Michael Blue, and Council Members Jessica Fitzwater and Kai Hagen.
“May is Military Appreciation Month, so I can’t think of a better time that we’re holding this public hearing and we’ll be revisiting it, the issue, and making a decision in a few weeks,” said McKay.
The bill, McKay said, would offer a two-tiered system based off of a veteran’s disability rating.
McKay said veterans with a disability rating of 50-74% would qualify for a 25% property tax credit.
“And a 50% tax credit for veterans with a disability rating of 75 to 99%,” explained McKay.
He said the State of Maryland already exempts veterans with a 100% disability rating from property taxes.
“The bill also provides conditions by which the spouse of a deceased but formerly qualifying disabled veteran can continue to receive these credits for a period of time,” he said.
McKay said this is just a small token of appreciation for our veterans.
“Our veterans sacrifice a great deal for our country — none more so than our disabled veterans — of course, there are those who make the ultimate sacrifice,” he said. “This is something we can do, it’s something we should do, and I think it’s something we must do to show our appreciation.”
